Certain wine grape vines have the ability to live to a venerable old age, and Grenache is one of them. This hard working variety was planted in Australia in the 1880s, largely for making intoxicating port-style wines preferred back then. Thankfully some of these old vineyards still exist, like the one Yalumba nurtures in the Barossa Valley. Planted in 1889, just 820 vines give their high-octane fruit to this remarkable wine. The heritage vines are dry-farmed, meaning they are unirrigated, which was of course the norm a century ago. The soils in Barossa feature sand atop water-retaining clay, and the gnarled old vines’ roots have rummaged deeply to access trace minerals and just enough moisture to survive. Showcasing the essence of Grenache, a heady fragrance of violets, wild strawberries, and bergamot greets the nose, preparing the tastebuds for bittersweet chocolate ganache, brandied cherries, and newspaper ink. Best of all is the texture – a velvety emollience with silken tannins that drift throughout the mouth. Open, decant, and pair with a veal roast or a magnificent wedge of aged cheese.
