Does it seem like summer is over here in B.C.? Not a chance. The weather pundits have predicted a warmer-than-average September, which means we keep cooking, eating, and drinking outdoors. Two selections are from one of my most favourite people, Spanish winemaking star and relentless innovator Telmo Rodriguez: a charming dry white from the mountains of Málaga and a vigorous Monastrell to gulp with grilled chorizo. Turkey is our ‘discovery’ wine this month - a peppy Rosé featuring the Karasakiz grape (it means ‘black chewing gum’) grown in the Gallipoli Peninsula. Warm some Turkish pide bread (pee-day), dip into olive oil sprinkled with crushed Urfa peppers, and wash it down with the Kabatepe. Austria’s frisky red Zweigelt grape has obligingly adapted itself to the north Okanagan, and Arrowleaf has made it their signature variety: juicy, leafy, and bursting with peppered strawberry flavours. Two stimulating Cabernets complete this month’s collection. The Echevarría family left their Basque home in the 1750s and gamely trekked to Chile. I’ve chosen a powerful, plush Cabernet from this much-admired family estate. And I know you’ll enjoy contrasting a Greek Cabernet—one with more than a whiff of intrigue!
