May’s Classic Red selections take us on a rollicking flavour journey from Germany to France where we compare a duo of Pinot Noir wines, then a two-bottle stop-over in British Columbia, before zipping south to California for a classic Cabernet and Rhône-styled red blend. The first two reds are light, juicy, and show a different side of Burgundy’s native grape Pinot Noir. One is from Southern Germany, where a famous Riesling producer has worked his magic with Spätburgunder in the Pfalz region. It contrasts nicely with a Pinot Noir from the south of France where a great Burgundy producer has established an outpost for excellent value wines. It shows the warmer side of Pinot Noir, but with a proper spine of minerality. I’ve included an intriguing blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay from the beloved winery JoieFarm, and a rich Gamay from the South Okanagan’s Black Sage Bench. If the first four reds in May’s pack all channel Burgundy (where Pinot Noir and Gamay are the celebrated red grapes), the final two evoke California’s heritage. Sterling Vintner’s Collection Cabernet Sauvignon delivers textbook cassis flavours in a terrific value wine, for the moments when only a rich red will do. Finally a voluptuous wine from a producer I adore that shows how wine can be gargantuan and elegant at the same time. You’ll want to fire up the grill for Marietta Cellars’ Christo, and grill some meat - perhaps some wild boar sausages to match the wine’s label! Here’s to glorious May, and wine to match.
