Who says we have to cut back in January?! I’d much rather live by the words of Julia Child, who championed ‘moderation… but plenty of it.’ Exercise a little more, rest well, up your fruit and veggie intake, and get on with life. We have quite a lavish collection of wines for you this month, starting the new year on a plentiful note. These six red wines will encourage you to get into the kitchen and cook – after you’ve been to the gym, of course! I’m so proud to spotlight a killer biodynamic red from Austria, made from the Zweigelt grape. Meinklang is a special estate committed to making natural wines, with absolutely nothing added or taken away. There are two reds that fit the bill of colossal value: one is an easy breezy Portugese blend, and the other a beloved Grenache-Syrah stalwart from the Midi. Hearty, rustic grub is in order, so toss a rump roast and some root veg into the slow cooker. Perhaps something fussier for the fine wine from Turkey, a Bordeaux-styled big red for Saturday night dinner. And finally, let’s toast one of B.C.’s most focused wineries who have given us a fragrant, earthy, Naramata Pinot Noir. Plan a fillet of herby baked salmon, or sear a duck breast for this local hero. Here’s to a prosperous January filled with good health and abundance.
