Finally it is December. The year is winding down, the weather is driving us indoors, and the festive season starts now! This month’s pack has exactly what you need for entertaining, fireside sipping, or just being prepared for when the extended family arrives. They’re a couple of casual reds to crack when the gang drops over: a juicy local blend made by one of B.C.’s great talents, Ann Sperling, and a cheerful, proper Chianti from Tuscany. I fell in love with Chile’s mystical Elqui Valley when I visited, and I’ve chosen a lithe, earthy Pinot Noir from the pioneering winery there, Falernia. Over 500 kilometers from Santiago, the Elqui Valley is on the fringe of nowhere. Dolcetto is the signature red grape of Alba in Piemonte, and Massolino’s edition shows its heady violet fragrance and jubilant cherry fruit to perfection. Serve with a platter of Italian salumi. Finally two duelling Cabernet Sauvignons to compare at your dinner table. One is from Washington State’s Wahluke Slope AVA, a hot, elevated ramp of gravel that allows Cab to ripen to perfection. Made by mighty Chateau Ste. Michelle winery, it parades cassis fruit like few wines do. Contrast this with a Napa example, made by a young winemaking talent and grapes from famed vineyards. Let both unwind in a decanter or large glass, then toast the season with your loved ones. Happy Holidays from all of us at NewDistrict.ca.
