This packs features a trio of some personal favourites – inspired by my musings about the very true fact that wine is really about the people who make them. The best winemakers pour endless emotion, intellect, and ambition into the wines that they make, and I can guarantee that they also think about you – the winelover who is going to pour their wine into a glass, drink it, and judge it! Florent Rouve of Rijckaert is a young, energetic, and animated Frenchman, with ginger hair and a ready grin. He lives in the Jura not far from his tiny shed and cellar where he endlessly fusses over his Savagnin and Chardonnay wines. Purity and terroir expression are his twin goals, and Les Sarres is his pet wine. Over in Piemonte, Giuseppe Vaira is a lanky, intellectual young dad who is sharply articulate and a deep thinker. Of a scientific mind, he constantly challenges himself and his wines. Respecting his father’s vision, he maintains the ‘clean traditionalist’ style of G.D. Vajra wines. He cares enormously about each plot’s individuality, and expressing the nuances of each distinct vintage, which can be a stress-inducing, nail-biting experience in Piemonte! Meeting Graham Pierce for the first time often involves him wheeling up on his racing bicycle, before he dives into the winery for long hours. Originally a chef, and always a die-hard sportsman, Graham approaches his wines sensually: attuned to texture, flavour, smell, and visual appeal. His Nota Bene is a total body experience. I hope you enjoy these wines, as they represent the heart and soul of three very special winemakers.
