March is the month when we want to believe Spring is finally here. The average March temperature for southern B.C. is 5°C (not very balmy!), so we will require good wine to warm us from within, and give us a sense that new life is just around the corner. Black Hill’s Roussanne will do exactly that, suffusing your senses with spicy heat and intoxicating flavour. I’ve included their newest wine in this month’s pack, a Roussanne so voluptuous it demands a rich dinner. It’ll age as well as the two reds, if you have the patience! From the wilds of the Sonoma coast, Littorai Pinot Noir channels Burgundy like few other new world versions. No doubt the fact that winemaker Ted Lemon immersed himself in Burgundy long ago has much to do with this wine’s ethereal elegance and astonishing correctness. Biodynamically farmed and made with an intuitive touch, pour it into a Burgundy glass, swirl, inhale deeply, and repeat often. You’ll also want an oversized glass for the huge Brunello that completes our March pack. Il Poggione’s Brunello di Montalcino is one of the stars of the powerful 2012 vintage. Hot and dry with a Sirocco wind episode that stressed the vines, this venerable estate picked at just the right time in 2012, creating a Brunello packed with dense fruit, and framed with muscular tannins. It demands a special dinner, and at least an hour in decanter.
