Who says we have to cut back in January?! I’d much rather live by the words of Julia Child, who championed ‘moderation… but plenty of it.’ Exercise a little more, rest well, up your fruit and veggie intake, and get on with life. And into the kitchen too, as I am hopeful that you’ll be inspired to cook up a storm and show off these wines at your dinner table. There is a cutting edge English sparkling wine to open with some oysters or sautéed prawns. Coates & Seely is the partnership of the director of an ultra-luxury wine group and a financial whiz – two longtime friends intent on pursuing the potential for Champagne grapes grown in the soft chalk of southern England. A couple from Berkeley, California have created one of the hottest projects in wine, called Donkey & Goat. The reference is to themselves: he’s the highly distractible donkey, and she’s the clear-thinking, task-focused goat! They are determined to make meaningful wines from old vineyards with as little interference at all, and their 2015 Carignane from a 79-year- old plot is potent, chewy, and meaty – definitely deserving of a venison roast or at the very least a wild boar terrine. Finally a profound wine from Australia’s Barossa Valley. Spanning three centuries of life, 820 Grenache vines have given their perfumed and plummy fruit for a wine that really just needs your largest glass and a quiet reverential moment – or a glistening crown roast of pork. Happy New Year from the entire New District team.
