October’s wine club is inspired by food. The Thanksgiving long weekend really defines this month for me, a time to lovingly prepare a glorious groaning board of dishes for friends and family. Thanksgiving dinner features traditional fare that span the entire flavour spectrum of sweet (yam casserole), sour (cranberry sauce), salty (the subtly salty brined turkey), bitter (Brussels sprouts), and umami (rich, savoury gravy). Dinner demands a diversity of wines that can handle a challenging but happy chaos of flavour, taste, and weight. I pour at least six different wines, and this pack features the styles I love the most. Three wines are from France (didn’t the French invent food and wine pairing!?) – an impossibly pretty French Rosé, a juicy light red from Sancerre, and a sublime, minerally Muscadet. And to suit the cooling weather, there are three reds that deliver rich fruit and spicy warmth from Portugal, Uruguay, and B.C. There’s a connection between the Marselan from Uruguay and the local Narrative Red: both projects are overseen by one of the wine world most brilliant wine minds, Alberto Antonini. Alberto is my friend, and I can assure you he is tickled pink to be making wine in the Okanagan Valley, and is passionately convinced there is world-class potential here. Happy Thanksgiving to you, and here’s to being grateful for good food, fine friends, and delicious wine.
