For me November is a month for the senses. All of mine are fully engaged: feeling the distinct nip in the air; seeing the trees aflame in a blaze of vermillion and tangerine; hearing the distant honks from a skein of geese crossing the sky, smelling the woodsmoke from the first hearth fires of the season, and tasting the hearty, soul-warming fare we all naturally turn to at this time of year. Wine is part of this too. I have chosen six wines from six countries that will touch and awaken the senses. We start with an elegant sparkler from South Africa’s achingly beautiful Cape winelands, a fizz so fine you’ll have trouble distinguishing it from Champagne. Then, a serene white from an unheralded region in the hinterland of Paris, for a dreamy goat’s cheese salad. Next, two mellow reds from the Iberian Peninsula that absolutely deserve your best braise! The Syrah grape is a relative newcomer to Chile’s historic wine regions, but from granite-based soils in the stubby coastal mountains, wines that have a Rhône-like structure, fine fragrance, and brightness are possible. That’s what our Chilean beauty delivers — a little violet, smoked meat, and kinetic acidity. And our honest Californian table red will remind you of what wine was like before ‘cult’ labels were ever a thing! This is one of my most favourite wines and stories — hope you agree!
