March is the month when we want to believe Spring is finally here. The average March temperature for southern B.C. is 5°C (not very balmy), so we will require good wine to warm us from within, and give us a sense that new life is just around the corner. Some bubbles start off March’s collection, a brisk and revitalizing Chardonnay-Pinot blend that is one of Canada’s finest. It really shows off Niagara’s limestone terroir, and I love the stylish Tiffany blue label. We also have a weighty white from the south of France made from Albariño - the elegant grape of Spain’s Galicia region. It’s for grilled fish or anything pork. Four highly smashable reds will give you many food pairing and party options. From the sultry island of Sardinia there is a soft, earthy/fruity red that I have been quaffing since my university days, and from Spain comes a wine with a compelling Canadian story. Nathalie Bonhomme hails from Montreal but made her mark in Spain with a series of wine hits that are now exported around the world. The bottle of strawberry scented Pelaverga ticks the discovery box this month, featuring a rare Piedmontese grape that’s been revived recently. Finally our richest red, a GMS blend from Powell and Son in South Australia’s Barossa Valley with a fine pedigree.
