And suddenly it’s February. Wherever you are in B.C., spring still seems a long time away. But, this month we have the Family Day long weekend, and Cupid’s very own holiday, Valentine’s Day. Our first white will make you feel spring has appeared in the glass. It’s a beguiling aromatic white wine from five grapes that share the Jagged Rock vineyard in Oliver, and is attractively dry, crisp and fresh as a daisy. Richer and weighty for a cold weather roast dinner, we have a decidedly serious Semillon from the wilds of South Africa. Old vines give it major oomph, and a little time in a huge oak cask brings toasted nut goodness. I’ve included a pair of duelling Malbec wines to showcase this plummy grape’s ability to transmit soils and climate brilliantly. I hope you’ll open them side-by-side with a nice grilled skirt steak (and maybe some chimichurri sauce for dunking) to appreciate the voice of Cahors versus Mendoza. Antica Vigna’s Appassionato would be a fitting bottle for St. Valentine’s Day: its plump, plush fruit will seduce your tastebuds, and perhaps someone else’s! Plus, one of the owners of Appassionato is named Eros! True story. My go-to weekday wines are often from the Rhône Valley, and Domaine Paul Autard Côtes-du-Rhône is a firm favourite. Earthy, stony, chewy, silky, it’s about as old school Rhône as it gets. We’ve got this short month covered with excellent wines!
