This juicy little number is without a doubt one of the best versions of Gamay in British Columbia. Last September when I was judging the 2017 B.C. Wine Awards, after three long days we were down to the final rounds, and about to judge to the best of the best. This wine was among them, and tasted blind (everything is tasted blind to remove any bias), it had all the hallmarks of excellent Gamay - intense cherry and strawberry aromas and flavours, modest tannins, invigorating acidity, and a pleasing juicy finish. Gamay is the great grape of the Beaujolais region in southern Burgundy, and B.C. has discovered a kinship with Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc, to use its full name. Volcanic Hills winery sits on the southeastern slope of a 60-million-year-old dormant volcano, Mt. Boucherie. Here the Gidda family grow grapes, knowing that their vines love the meagre, acid-boosting volcanic soils. This is bulls-eye Gamay, bright, pure-fruited, and invigorating, and begging for a charcuterie platter. And the award we gave it? A Platinum medal - one of only seven.
