Finding a new grape variety to enjoy is one of the best things about wine. There are over 1,000 grapes making delicious wines around the world - 72 countries, in fact. Pelaverga is one of the really interesting ones. It has a special appellation called Verduno in Piemonte, and it’s here where the superior, small clone, the 'piccolo' Pelaverga has been re-established. It seems this grape was known and admired as early as the 1500s, where it was planted alongside Nebbiolo and Barbera in prime vineyards. Somehow it dwindled to just 18 hectares but has sprung back to life on the strength of wines like this Pelaverga from Terre del Barolo. A co-op established in 1958 by a commanding officer in the Resistance, Terre del Barolo has a high reputation and almost 400 members. Terre del Barolo proudly labels itself 'a family of smallholders' committed to making authentic wines following organic farming practices. This medium-bodied red sports strawberry fruit, earthy complexity, and a subtle tannin framework. Pair with antipasti and savoury prosciutto.
