The name of this wine sums up the Aussie character perfectly. Relaxed, always humourous, and having fun with words. The Gee Whiz Tram Driver is Barossa slang for Gewurztraminer, and this is a super-cool, laid-back, cheeky dry white that is so entirely gluggable, it’s nuts. The fruit comes from the Eden Valley, a lofty, hilly section of the Barossa Valley, where aromatic grapes like Gewurztraminer and Riesling (which is 15% of the juicy blend) ripen slowly and optimally, while retaining their fresh acidity. St. John’s Road is a partnership of some young-ish Barossa bucks, including Phil Lehmann, who reluctantly (and after earning an electrical engineering degree) became a winemaker just like his father, the legendary Peter Lehmann. Phil makes wines that are unpretentious and humble, and most of all he wants to let pure fruit flavours shine in the glass. Can you say lychee and lime? Plus a little green apple, white peach and grapey goodness. As fruity as the wine smells, it’s dry, zesty, light-bodied and lettuce-crisp. In fact, you might pair with some lettuce wraps, or spicy Thai chicken wings, or just a big glass after you’ve cut the lawn. Speaking of garden work, these vines are exclusively trimmed by a flock of sheep!
