When I tasted this substantial red last fall, I knew it had to be in our wine club. I’m not alone in my esteem, as one of the world’s most influential critics has lavished 94 points on it too. Santa Ema was founded in 1956 by Pedro Pavone, who had emigrated to Chile from Piemonte in 1917. The estate has grown to a generous 500 hectares with vineyards throughout Chile, including the beautiful Leyda Valley, where this Syrah comes from. Perched on the frigid Pacific coast, Leyda is an open transverse valley, refreshed by ocean breezes and bathed in cool sunshine. All importantly the soils are granitic, just like Syrah’s homeland of the Northern Rhone Valley in France. Granite gives wines sizeable structure and a glinting mineral finish.

Leyda’s cool climate is responsible for the delicate violet perfume and the red/black fruit profile, and especially the bright, juicy, smoky palate. Always great value, Santa Ema was recently named one of the Wine Spectator's Top 20 World’s Finest Wine Brands. Smoked brisket would pair well.
