If you have not heard of wines from the Jura – you are not alone! This secretive mountain region hugs the Swiss border, directly opposite the slopes of Burgundy 70 kilometers to the west. Nested on a series of curved terraces, an eclectic group of grapes make highly distinctive Jura wines that the world is finally getting to know. One of them is Savagnin, a superb-quality thick-skinned white grape, with bright apple and citrus flavours, weighty body, and sizzling acidity. Most famous for an immortal, sherry-like wine called Vin Jaune, Savagnin is nowadays increasingly made in a dry and crisp style, much like a fine white Burgundy. This wine is made by Rijckaert’s brilliant protégé, Florent Rouve, who took over the estate in 2013. I tasted this very wine with Florent in his miniscule cellar, hewn into the Jura’s magnificent limestone rock, and fell for it hard! Les Sarres is a sun-drenched, east-facing sloped plot that allows Savagnin to ripen richly and completely. Made in neutral oak casks, Les Sarres shows rich lemon curd, pungent botanicals, and an impossibly long, flinty finish. It’s simply riveting. Try it with the famous cheese of the region, Comté.
