Without question Ridge Vineyards is considered to be one of the greatest wine estates in the world. Distinct character and minimal intervention have always been the hallmarks of Ridge, in the savant hands of Paul Draper, one of the worlds most treasured and admired winemakers. Though he recently retired, the ideals of Ridge will never waver. They shine through this Lytton Springs Zinfandel blend. The grapes grow in Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley, where 115-year-old Zin, Petite Syrah, Carignane, and Mataro vines bask in clay soils on dramatic slopes. Powerful and explosive in the glass, the exceptional 2013 vintage boasts lavish inky blue/purplish fruit, mocha, spices, and new leather, with grippy tannins and sweet toasty oak. Ridge uses only American oak barrels of various ages, and is committed to complete transparency, and you can read all the ingredients on the label. There is exquisite balance, decadent body and weight to Lytton Springs, but most notable is its breathtaking freshness and harmony. It fully deserves a special meal of a fine standing rib roast, but decant for an hour beforehand. Or age for another 15 years.
