‘Born to be different’ is the motto of the Prisoner Wine Company. Defiantly different, they take an unconventional approach to winemaking, sourcing fruit from impassioned growers across California. Started by a guy called Dave Phinney (who also started Orin Swift) he sold the brand to the owners of Quintessa in Rutherford for about $40 million (USD), and they recently dealt it to a mega company for $285 million. It’s a fascinating bit of wine business, and was a very Big Deal in the industry. The winemaking team is brilliant and righteous (in the soul sense!), working hard to let each vineyard express itself. From the exceptionally 2013 vintage (hailed by critic Robert Parker as potentially the greatest North Coast vintage ever) Thorn features Merlot from three sensational vineyards which bring colossal concentration and uplifting freshness to the table. Malbec from Napa’s Oak Knoll, and Syrah from nippy, foggy Carneros together comprise 23% of the blend. Dark crimson with a nose that detonates with fruitcake, chocolate and Black Forest cake, the flavours are dense, rich and mouth coating. You’ll want a serious charred cut with this big boy.
