Plumpjack Syrah 2013 is a smoky, meaty, full-bodied red from two pedigreed Napa vineyards.
Gavin Newsom (current Lieutenant Governor of California) and Billy Getty (yes, that Getty) established PlumpJack Winery in 1995, inspired by one of Shakespeare’s most memorable characters, Sir John “PlumpJack” Falstaff. PlumpJack quickly became a celebrated Napa winery, with a special reputation for Syrah, a relative rarity in the Napa Valley. Syrah from two vineyards (one in cool Carneros, the other from the iconic sunny Stagecoach vineyard in Atlas Peak) combine, creating wonderful complexity and balance. This is a rich, bold, intense, and concentrated wine from an outstanding warm and dry year that produced small thick-skinned grapes packed with explosive flavour. Classic Syrah aromas of smoke and pepper combine with blackberry and boysenberry, dark chocolate and mocha flavours. Ageing in new and used oak barrels smooths out considerable tannins and allows this wine to pair with a magnificent prime rib roast. Let breathe in a decanter before serving, or cellar for up to a decade. It’s pricey, but it’s also pedigreed.
