Pastor Díaz Bodegas - Castroviejo Rioja Tempranillo

Castroviejo is a lovely village in the province and autonomous community of La Rioja, which covers just 20.75 square kilometres and has a whopping population of 59 people. Here you will find the Pastor Diaz family, who have been growing vines, making Rioja wine, and producing olive oil for as long as anyone can remember. They lavish care on Rioja’s supremely noble Tempranillo grape. The wine is 100% organically-farmed Tempranillo, and stylistically it is classic, traditional Rioja, which is to say it’s ripe, smooth, and mellowed by extended ageing in American oak. It has intense aromas of sweet dark fruit and notes of licorice, berries-and-cream flavours, and plenty of oak-induced complexity. It’s just the right kind of wine for autumn — round, wood-burnished, and warming. Casual with up-front fruit and satisfyingly deep flavour, it’s what I call a more-ish wine — you just want more! It’s also what you want after a day of planting bulbs for next spring’s flowers, raking the leaves, or a rambling walk in the woods, possibly to your secret mushroom patch. Braise some meat, open the wine, and dig in.
