Painted Rock’s Red Icon has caused a sensation from the shores of Skaha Lake to the haute cuisine restaurants of Shanghai. A Right Bank Bordeaux-styled Merlot blend, it exudes elegance, finesse and pedigree. This vintage is a blend of 33% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc, 19% Malbec, 16% Petit Verdot and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, and shows the balance and complexity that meticulous blending can achieve. Fastidiously farmed with advice from top Bordeaux consultants, the estate was planted in 2005 by the Skinner family, on a magnificently-sited vineyard that slopes downward toward Skaha Lake. It’s a boldly fruited rich red with blackberry, dark plums, chocolate and fragrant sagebrush complexity. Intense flavours unfold with every mouthful, adding layers of cassis to prominent, velvety tannins, and sweet spice from 18 months in French oak casks (30% new). As always, trademark Okanagan high acidity adds refreshment and balance to this structured, smouldering red. From a warm and forward vintage, it’s accessible now with an hour in a decanter, but will repay cellaring for the next 10-15 years. It demands a prime roast of beef or saddle of venison.
