Marietta Cellars - Old Vines Red

Half a century ago, young Chris Bilbro hung around his Aunt Marietta’s table, learning about simple good cooking, hard work, and honesty. Leaving a desultory career in hospital administration years later, Chris founded Marietta Cellars in 1978, in a splendid cow barn in Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley. His notion (inspired by his no-nonsense aunt) was to make real wine the unfussed way the pioneers did: from a mess of grapes, and un-vintaged. The result was the Old Vine Red. Each year the Lot Number changes, and the blend morphs a bit. Lot 64 is classic old school California in every way: a Sonoma/Mendocino blend of Zinfandel, Carignan, Petite Sirah, Syrah, and a pinch of Italian grape varieties from old mountain vineyards — the perfect recipe for honest California table red. What’s crazy about this wine is that it’s a blend of four vintages, and over 40 different individual wines. Blockbuster fruit and burly tannins, but it all melts together perfectly in the mouth. Robust, chunky, big and rich — and killer value for money. This wine is gaining cult status in California, so don’t miss out. Pair with short ribs, mole brisket, or anything smoked.
