The best thing about Champagne is discovering the little maisons (houses) that aren’t so well known (or don’t have the multi-million dollar budget of the big players). The Champagne region is large (30,000 hectares), with over 15,000 farmers under contract to mammoth producers. A recent phenomenon in Champagne is for some of those artisan growers to stop selling their grapes, and start making micro amounts of their own wine. Called ‘Grower Champagne’, or even better, ‘Farmer Fizz’, these sparklers show more fruit character, vineyard expression, and much more ambition! They are lesser-known names too, but deserve our attention, like this tiny producer whom I adore! Marie Courtin is owned by the feisty and energetic Dominique Moreau, named for her grandmère, Marie Courtin. The estate covers two hectares planted mostly with Pinot Noir, and that’s the base of this Résonance cuvée. It has aromas and flavours of tiny wild strawberries, citrus zest, toasted brioche, and roasted nuts, and a long, succulent finish. There is no dosage, so get ready for miraculous eye-popping acidity. Pair with oysters, omelettes, caviar, or extra-aged cheese.
