From the heart of the picturesque Loire Valley comes this other-worldly white. Faia is old vine Chenin Blanc (vines are 30 to 100 years old!) from a rugged shale vineyard, whole-cluster pressed, slow-fermented in old wooden casks, and well-exposed to oxygen and lees. A soft brassy colour, the nose displays delicate herbs, apple and pear and a typical earthy Chenin element. Lively orchard fruit flavours are kept fresh with high mouth-watering acidity, and the dry finish is long and minerally. Medium bodied and possessing the tang and yeasty character of naturally made wine, it’s a perfect match for bloomy rind cheese, mushroom pasta, or rustic pâté. Drink now, or let it develop greater complexity over the next 3-5 years. This wine has a fantastic B.C. connection, as Kenji Hodgson was the assistant winemaker at JoieFarm, Red Rooster and Blasted Church over a decade ago. He was also a wine columnist for the Vancouver Province along with James Nevison, penning a popular piece called Half A Glass. Kenji and his wife Mai landed in Anjou in 2009 with virtually no French skills, few dollars, but massive energy and ambition. The rest is liquid history.
