Gigondas bottle

M. Chapoutier is one of France’s most admired wine estates. Based in the Rhone Valley the bottles are highly recognizable with their famous Braille label (this honours a blind friend who loved wine but could not choose bottles without the help of someone to read the labels to him). Gigondas is a village not far from Avignon, and the red grape blend is exactly like pricier Chateauneuf-du-Pape. As always, Grenache leads the charge in this silky and fragrant blend, buttressed with Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault. M. Chapoutier is also passionately committed to biodynamic cultivation (unique for such a large estate), and these grapes are farmed without chemicals, or synthetic fertilizers, and the yields are severely restricted. Lavender, dark red fruit, herbal fragrance, cracked pepper and wafting mineral notes distinguish the aromas, and the palate is a silky, stony, spicy textural delight. It’s a medium-weight stunner that smells of the herb-scented southern Rhone Valley. Smooth tannins help it drink beautifully now with game or pan roasted pork chops, or save for the cheese course. Give this young vintage a vigorous splash in a decanter before enjoying.
