Some wines are just born fascinating. Dragon may be a quirky name for an ultra-sophisticated white blend, but like a dragon this wine is a legendary creature. Whites from alpine Piedmont (this is the land of big reds Nebbiolo and Barbera after all) are not as renowned, but the much-decorated producer G.D. Vajra (say Vie-rah) who bought Luigi Baudana’s tiny winery has spun 4 brilliant grapes into this enchanter. Perfumed with citrus and acacia, the nose is spicy and rich, whilst the flavours are a kaleidoscope of peaches, lemon, spicy and vanilla. The Dragon is completely unoaked yet the body feels lush and substantial, with riveting acidity adding endless refreshment. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc with a measure each of Riesling and Nascetta (nahs-CHET-ah) from mature vineyards create the exotic Dragon. It’s definitely an ‘outside the box’ wine, which makes it all the more fun to experience. Rich enough for sockeye salmon or grilled pork chops, or sip with tajarin, Piedmont’s famous buttered egg noodles.
