Littorai (say Lit-ore-aye) is a small family-owned winery producing coveted vineyard-designated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the true north coast of California. Littorai was founded in 1993 by Ted Lemon and his wife Heidi. Ted studied eonology at the Université de Bourgogne, and worked with many of Burgundy’s greatest winemakers, including Dujac, de Villaine, Roumier, and Bruno Clair. Famously, he was the first American ever hired as a vineyard manager and winemaker of a Burgundian estate, at none other than Domaine Guy Roulot in Meursault. Since 2002 he’s been involved in highly esteemed, biodynamic winery Burn Cottage in New Zealand’s Central Otago. Littorai wines are also farmed and made biodynamically, and this Pinot Noir conveys finesse and elegance like few other Californian efforts. Wildly scented with violets and sweet red berries, the youthful palate shows bright raspberry fruit, chiseled acidity and a long mineral-flecked finish. Fresh and fruit-forward now, this will age gracefully for the next 5-8 years, and definitely open up in a large Burgundy glass. Serve with a special dinner of seared duck breast and wild mushrooms.
