DJ Kearney’s sixteen years in the wine industry have embraced teaching, wine writing and wine criticism. She has trained over a thousand sommelier candidates throughout North America for the International Sommelier Guild and the Wine and Spirit Education Trust, and has consulted for many global wine marketing bodies — including Wines of Chile, Wines of South Africa, Wines of California, Jura Wines, Sopexa, and Wines of Argentina — while leading educational master-classes for these entities around North America.
She appears on television and radio regularly and moderates and presents at wine festivals and, throughout North America, on behalf of industry trade organizations. Having traveled to most major wine regions of the world, DJ brings a truly global perspective to her work. She holds a Bachelor of Arts., the WSET Diploma, and the ISG Sommelier Certification, and is in the process of obtaining her Master of Wine designation. For the past several years, she has been the Drink Editor for Vancouver Magazine and critic/contributor for WineAlign.
DJ is a seasoned wine judge, and has started programs developing and mentoring the next generation of judges in Canada; throughout the year, she can be found teaching the Wine and Spirit Education Trust professional wine classes at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts. She is also Vice-President of the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers, BC Chapter, and a member of Les Dames d’Escoffier.
While she is a global wine expert, DJ is especially devoted to the wines of her home region. For many years, she has been an industry advisor and ambassador for BC wines, teaching and presenting on behalf of the industry. Recently she toured Decanter’s Steven Spurrier through the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys, and curated the historic Judgment of BC tasting in Vancouver.
