DJ Kearney’s eighteen years in the wine industry have embraced teaching, wine writing and wine criticism. She has trained over a thousand sommelier candidates throughout North America for the International Sommelier Guild and the Wine and Spirit Education Trust, and has consulted for many global wine marketing bodies — including Wines of Chile, Wines of South Africa, Wines of California, Jura Wines, Sopexa, and Wines of Argentina — while leading educational master-classes for these entities around North America.
She appears on television and radio regularly and moderates, presents and judges at wine festivals and competitions around the globe. Having traveled to most major wine regions of the world, DJ brings a truly global perspective to her work. She holds a Bachelor of Arts., the WSET Diploma, and the ISG Sommelier Certification, and has spent four years in persuit of her Master of Wine designation. For the past several years, she has been the Drink Editor for Vancouver Magazine and critic/contributor for WineAlign.
DJ is a seasoned wine judge, and has started programs developing and mentoring the next generation of judges in Canada; throughout the year, she can be found teaching the Wine and Spirit Education Trust professional wine classes at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts. She is also Vice-President of the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers, BC Chapter, and a member of Les Dames d’Escoffier.
While she is a global wine expert, DJ is especially devoted to the wines of her home region. For many years, she has been an industry advisor and ambassador for BC wines, teaching and presenting on behalf of the industry. DJ has toured international critics and personalities like Decanter’s Steven Spurrier through the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys, and inagurated the Judgment of BC benchmark tasting, now in its fourth year.
