This tasty little gem is a brilliant way to meet the Montepulciano grape. Sangiovese (the main grape of Tuscany) is Italy’s most planted red grape, but Montepulciano is right up there too, grown from Umbria all the way to Puglia. It is often blended with Sangiovese, but this sapid version is solo Montepulciano d’Abruzzo (say mon-tay-pool-CHAN-oh da-BROOT-zoh for the region). The region called the Abruzzi is down in the south, where historically wine quantity was valued over quality. That’s changing now, and wines like this fruit-drenched beauty deploy grapes from established vineyards that have been severely pruned back to concentrate flavours and make a focused wine such as this, at a yield of less than two bottles of wine per vine. La Quercia (say la-QWIR-cha) refers to the oak trees that dot the rolling, hilly landscape in this rustic part of Italy. Montepulciano is capable of muscular tannins, and these are nicely ripe and coated with cherry flavours. Savoury, brisk, earthy, and unoaked, it’s a terrific wine for a rustic ragu ladeled over creamy polenta.
