Ensemblé 2015 by Naramata’s La Frenz winery is a sensational blend of Sauvignon Blanc (78%) and Sémillon. Rich and succulent, it is inspired by the beautiful dry white wines found in Graves, a well-known sub-region of Bordeaux. Displaying a superb layering of complex winemaking techniques, this wine releases exotic aromatics of passionfruit, gardenia and lemongrass. A vein of gooseberry, Seville orange marmalade and subtle oak spice carry through to the lingering, creamy finish. This wine shows a honeyed warmth and emollient texture throughout, finishing with a dried hay character so typical of aged Semillon. Barrel-fermented and aged in mostly in mostly neutral barrels with plenty of lees contact for added creaminess and weight. I have tasted this wine in blind competition judging, and it has always astonished me. Without a doubt one of the best whites wines made in Canada, this vintage was awarded a rare platinum medal in the most recent National Wine Awards of Canada (where I was judging). Incredibly versatile, pair with white meat, smoky sablefish, seared tuna, lobster, crab, or spot prawns. It will change positively over the next couple of years, developing toasted nut and lime curd flavours.
