Kumeu River’s Village Chardonnay 2016 is a graceful, lemony dry white from a pedigreed estate.
Without a doubt, Kumeu River is one of New Zealand’s most celebrated boutique wineries. Nestled in the rolling hinterland of Auckland, this modest family operation has been turning heads around the world for decades. Their jewel-box of wines is a tiny one, and this Village Chardonnay (say vee-LAA-gh with a French flair) is made with the same impeccable care as the higher priced wines. Their reverence for Burgundian sensibilities (dry-farmed grapes are wild-fermented in both tank and old oak barrels) shows in the flinty nose, bright palate suffused with lemon curd and nectarine flavours, creamy texture and whip cracking acidity. Caressing richness, mineral force a smoldering finish will be ravishing with seared halibut, grilled oysters or citrusy chicken.
