Here is a wine with a jaw-dropping story: Evangelos Averoff, former Prime Minister of Greece, allegedly pinched the vines from Bordeaux’s Chateau Margaux in the late 1950s, secretly weaving them into a basket (a gift for his mother, he told customs officials!) and transporting them back to Greece. Whatever their origin—skullduggery or not—these vines were the first Cabernet Sauvignon in Greece, and one of the highest vineyards anywhere in Europe, planted 900 to 1200 meters above sea level at Metsovo, Epirus. The exceedingly steep vineyards are planted on rugged schist terrain and are cultivated and harvested entirely by hand. Intriguingly for Greece, the climate is cool, with rain, frost, and heavy snow in winter. This is archetypically elegant Cabernet, with complex aromas and flavours of herbs, dark berries, plums, and the distinctive cigar box and tobacco character of a maturing red. A year or so in new French oak casks adds a rich lustrous sheen. Perhaps it is the rarified pedigree of the vines that makes this taste very French. This bottle is ready to drink now with a fine dinner of slow roasted lamb shoulder.
