J.L. Chave Côtes-du-Rhône Mon Coeur 2014 is a textbook Rhone blend of Grenache and Syrah. Tremendous quality for the price.
With over 500 years of direct father-to-son succession since 1491, Chave is utterly unique in the world of wine. If Chave Hermitage red and white are considered to be the Northern Rhone’s greatest wines, the Côtes-du-Rhône Mon Coeur is certainly one France’s greatest bargains – such depth and complexity, combined with delightful typicity - is terrific at the price. The fruit comes from four organic estates in the south of the valley, from 20 to 60 year old vineyards. Strawberry and mulberry flavours, with the unique stamp of herbal scrub known as ‘garrigue’ and just the right meaty firmness, this is open and and delicious to drink now – with Bouef en Daube perhaps – but also an excellent candidate for a bit of bottle age.
