This is classic old-school California ‘mountain red’ wine from dry-farmed, head-pruned 19th Century Zinfandel vines, planted high on a ridge in the Russian River Valley. Just 1.8 acres of the original vineyard remain, revived in 1995 by the Dutton family. Altitude, proximity to the chilly Pacific Ocean, and vines over 100 years of age combine to produce a very small crop of explosively flavoured Zin. The wine is rich, ripe, and fulsome, with a definitive North Coast balance of potent fruit, fresh acidity, and velour tannins. Wines made from old vines such as these possess an intrinsic elegance and restraint, so don’t be expecting a bruiser. You’ll find density but not heaviness, ebullient fresh fruit, not jam, and a herbal, saline nuance. Dan Goldfield and Steve Dutton share a special synergy, and started their collaboration back in 1998. Their entire range of wines is delicious and well made, perfectly expressing the cool conditions of Sonoma County. From one of the greatest vintages California has ever experienced, the 2012 Morelli Lane Zin is built for dinner, like slow cooked pork shoulder, or Kobe beef meatballs and truffled spaghetti.
