How do you like the sound of a knockout daily drinker from one of the best estates in the Southern Rhone? Domaine de Cristia has a legendary reputation for their sleek, full-bodied Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and they own some vineyard land just outside this celebrated appellation. That’s where 35-year-old Grenache vines grow in top-quality clay-sand soils, making a ‘Vin de Pays Méditerranée’ or a ‘country wine’. Casual and relaxed, this generous red features Grenache’s classic white pepper, strawberry fruit coulis, and liquorice flavours, with discreet, silky tannins and a lengthy perfumed finish. There is no oak used for fermentation and ageing, but rather large concrete vats which are time-honoured in the region (and by the way, concrete is wildly back in fashion worldwide). This lets us appreciate the dusty lavender-scented terroir and the unadorned soul of Grenache. Give this red 20 minutes in the fridge, fling something porky on the barbie, and prepare to enjoy a brilliant country wine.
