The labour of love of the three Toor brothers, Desert Hills has quietly been making delicious reds for over a decade. They have turned up the gas lately, astutely hiring Anthony Buchanan, a winemaker I have respected since his days at Eau Vivre in the Similkameen Valley. Anthony was a hairdresser for 21 years before a career move to winemaking (true story!). This wine has lovely rich Gamay character: scented blossoms, white pepper, bright and expressive black cherry fruit, a touch of candied apple, and dusty minerals. When you have your first gulp, you’ll appreciate Gamay’s lively acidity, mild and tender tannins, and soft core of summer pudding berries. It’s juicy, and spicy with everything in the right place. The warm conditions of the Black Sage Bench bring exuberant ripeness to this bottle, and a dusting of herbal scrub too. I drink this red after 20 minutes in the fridge, which makes it extra gulpable, and delicious with rich pâté or smoky bacon burger. Gamay makes an excellent array of wines up and down the Okanagan Valley, and this is one of the weightier ones.
