In the beautiful countryside just west of Portland, lies David Hill Winery. Nestled on historical land that dates back to the late 1800’s, this is a winery provides a treasure-trove of delicious and unexpected drinking. The winery takes its name from an old family name in the Forest Grove area, the Frederick David Family, and an actual hill, where the winery is located. There is a charming 1883 farmhouse used as tasting room, and one of Oregon's viticultural pioneers, Charles Coury planted the first wines (which he brough directly from Alsace and Burgundy) in 1965. The Farmhouse blend consists of 40% Sangiovese, 40% Mourvedre, 10% Malbec, and 10% Barbera. These are of grapes that need generous heat and don't grow so well in the moderate Willamette Valley where David Hill is located, so they are sourced from near by Washington State where the warm climate is appropriate for such grapes. High-toned cherry fruit, hints of pepper, and a medium-bodied, creamy and smooth mouthfeel. It's a super-interesting and delicious wine for a nice winter braise or cheese and charcuterie platter.
