Anthony Gismondi's Holiday Party Picks bottle

This is the first of four guest packs that Anthony Gismondi will select for New District. Anthony is Canada's premier wine critic and journalist, and he writes each day at gismondionwine.com, and each week in the Vancouver Sun. We have created just 36 of Anthony's Holiday Party Packs, so do not miss out.

Anthony introduces some of his favourite wines for the holidays here, and all bottles come tissue wrapped, ready for gifting:

When New District asked if I wanted to put together a Holiday Party Pack for them I couldn’t resist.

Finding the perfect dress or the perfect shoes for the Holidays doesn't mean much if you are caught serving or drinking yesterday’s wine. So, I made this party pack to multi-task. No matter what your wine needs are, it's going to make you look good.

From Spain, the Parés Baltà Cemphasized textava Brut sparkler is the perfect party icebreaker that works with a wide variety of appetizers. If you need a terrific hostess gift, simply wrap it up and take it with you to the next party. Oh, did we mention it’s organic? From Australia, enter the Hardys HRB 644 Riesling 2010. Riesling's are a very food-friendly wine. This one comes with a little bottle age, adding sophistication to the party.

If seafood is on the menu anytime during the holidays, it doesn’t get much better than with the Robert Mondavi Oakville Fumé Blanc. This historic Napa white will take your guests to a new level of appreciation for Sauvignon Blanc. You can’t party without red wine, hence our three-nation red wine entertainers. From British Columbia, I selected a juicy, soft, hipster Stag's Hollow Grenache. It’s a mid-weight, fresh, red wine that works with pork or chicken appetizers, and makes a great gift for the hard-to-buy-for wine-drinker.

Should you require grown-up dinner wines, or upscale red wine gifts, look to our French pick, from the ever popular Rhone Valley, the Jaboulet Aîné Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Cedres. Les Cedres is an 80/10/10 Grenache, Cinsault and Mourvèdre blend, grown using bio-dynamic practices. You could pair it with Two Hands Gnarly Dudes Shiraz, an Australian icon from the Barossa Valley, the second home of Rhone grape varieties.

Happy Holidays from all of us at Gismondi on Wine,

Anthony Gismondi
