Château de Sancerre - Sancerre Rouge

Did you notice that this wine is rouge? Sancerre is a cool region in the Loire Valley famed for white wines made from Sauvignon Blanc, but a very well-kept secret is that fragrant Pinot Noir is made here too! Interestingly, only since the mid-20th century has Sancerre been primarily known for white wine. Sauvignon Blanc only became predominant after the phylloxera epidemic of the late 1800s, when it was found to be more responsive to grafting than the commonly planted red grapes. The Château de Sancerre is an important historic property that stands in the heart of the vineyards, and since 1919 it has been owned by Marnier Lapostolle, the producers of Grand Marnier liqueur. The estate practices rigorous biodynamic cultivation, and has been certified since 2004. Château de Sancerre’s Sancerre Rouge is a fresh, bright Pinot with plenty of currant, raspberry, cherry, and currant leaf aromas, supple mouthfeel, and a clean, juicy, lingering finish. Replicate a casual Loire long weekend lunch of chewy baguette, charcuterie, Chavignol cheese, cornichons… and Sancerre Rouge!
