Calmel & Joseph is a sanctuary for vignerons in the Languedoc Roussillon region of France. The domaine farms 200 estate hectares and also acts as a negociant (think broker or middle-man), with contracts to help farm vineyards, buy fruit, and make authentic terroir wines. The farming is pristine, with absolutely no chemicals, pesticides or synthesized fertilizers used. I am a massive fan of the entire range, especially this chewy, inky, fragrant Languedoc Rouge. The blend is very classic to the region, sporting half Syrah, with the balance 20% Grenache, and 30% Carignan. The diversity of Languedoc's terroir is the point of this wine: the Grenache comes from splendid granite and schist soils in the north-west Roussillon, while the Syrah comes from a site sheltered by the Black Mountains. The ancient Carignan vines are grown on red clay soil and bring a distinct freshness to the blend. There is no oak used at all, just fermentation and ageing in traditional concrete tanks. Dark berry flavours, smoky herbs, lavender, and dusty minerals - it’s a heart-warmly authentic expression of place and grape. Keep dinner casual… just layer grilled veggies on a steaming bowl of creamy polenta and dig in.
