Boutinot 'Les Coteaux Schisteux' Séguret Côtes du Rhônes Villages bottle

There’s a French word that ripples through the wine world: terroir. It’s the notion that great wines faithfully reflect their environment—the soils, the climate, the vines and the subtle signature of the winemaker. Terroir is an identity origin stamp: the sense of place, the somewhere-ness of wine. This is a spine-tingling terroir wine. It’s a potent blend of thick-trunked old Grenache (80%) and Syrah vines grown in terraced rock-strewn vineyards on the “coteaux schisteux”—the steep hills of schist (a metamorphic rock that vines love) that prop up the village of Séguret. Pour into a big-bowled glass and inhale the herbal scrub fragrance, scent of wild strawberries, and white pepper spice. Take a sip and the flavours detonate with sweetly ripe red fruit, savoury Bay leaf, a suggestion of meat charred in a cast iron pan, and finally a muscular finish of firm tannins and dusty Séguret schist. It tastes like liquid rock—stony and silky—and you’d better have a juicy grilled sausage or some wild boar prosciutto close at hand.
