You’ll love this earthy, juicy, chewy Tor del Colle Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva 2013 with a smoky burger or carne asado.
This is classic provincial red vino from Italy’s southeastern coast on the Adriatic Sea between Molise and Marche. The workhorse Montepulciano grape (say mon-tey-pull-CHANNO) is beloved for giving us fruity, earthy wines, with ripe tannins and frisky acidity—in fact, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC has earned a reputation as one of Italy’s most exported wines. Abruzzo’s high-quality clay limestone terroir contributes a nice mineral spine to our Montepulciano, and the warm, breezy climate ensures grapes ripen their classic, tangy, cherry flavours. The Tor del Colle spends at least two years mellowing in oak cask and bottle before release, indicated by the word “Riserva” on the label. This savoury, dark-fruited, grippy red from a picture-perfect vintage goes down easily with smoky bacon burgers, a beefy taco, or grilled radicchio salad.
