Thomas Borthwick, meat trade pioneer, was the first, in what would turn out to be a long line of Borthwick farmers. A generation later PJ Borthwick settled in Wairarapa, a place that would be home to more than cattle. Paddy Borthwick saw something more in Wairarapa. He saw a new potential in its climate and terroir, and ushered the family into farming grapes. Paddy sought out a viticultural education at Roseworthy College in 1985, before taking his knowledge to three continents and five countries. He found his way back in Wairarapa, and started laying foundations for Borthwick vineyard and winery in 1996. Producing quality wines for more than ten years, Paddy Borthwick is looking to future generations to carry on the sustainable winemaking philosophy.
