Bodega Garzón - Marselan Reserva Red

Garzón is a small village on Uruguay’s Atlantic coast, made famous by El Garzón, the restaurant/hotel established there by world-renowned Argentine chef Francis Mallman. Bodegas Garzón is an ambitious project dedicated to making world-class natural wines in a region where wine has not been made before. Garzón is a vast enterprise – a once-in-a-lifetime creation under the guidance of Alberto Antonini, one of the world’s most influential oenologists and a leading evangelist for natural winegrowing. This is a unique terroir, with breeze-cooled vineyards just 11 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The vines are planted on crystalline basement soils that originated 2.5 billion years ago, and this lends a minerally and juicy panache. Marselan is a crossing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache grapes – the idea was to combine the structure and intensity of Cabernet with the body and fleshiness of Grenache. And this wine does exactly that, with generosity of red fruit, a pleasingly firm structure, and intensely long mineral finish. It seems to have been made with Thanksgiving dinner in mind, savoury enough for the bird and velvety gravy, but ripe enough to keep stride with yams or Brussels sprouts.
