Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Roberts have been making small lots of experimental wines from extreme vineyards since 2001. They believe that making complex, interesting wines in California — where ripeness is a given — involves focus on structure, such as acidity and tannin, rather than fruit. It’s not surprising that their wines have a savoury, ‘non-primary’ character atypical of California wine. Considered next-generation trailblazers, they already have a feverish cult following amongst the sommelier trade, and wine insiders. Six sustainably/organically farmed Sonoma Coast vineyards supply fruit for this remarkable Syrah, which combines lavender and minty botanical complexity with intense inky blackcurrant fruit. About a year in neutral French oak gives firm tannins a chamois polish, smoothing out the memorable finish. Drinkable now, but good for a decade of ageing. Pairing options includes prime cuts of roasted meat, venison sausages or duck confit.
