This wine comes from one of the wilder parts of the Cape Winelands. A few years ago I was on the north coast 265 kilometers adrift from Cape Town, inhaling the briny air, feeling the stiff, salty winds, burning a little from the incessant sunshine, and peering through my binoculars at a Eurasian Oystercatcher (yes, full confession, I am a birdwatcher!). Semillon is a white grape we associate more with Bordeaux and Australia, but here in the Citrusdal region, 50-year-old bush vines manage to eek out a living in red soils, low rainfall, and extreme conditions. Farmed meticulously by Henk Laing since forever, this vineyard sits on the coast near Lambert’s Bay and is definitely off the beaten path of South Africa’s usual wine route. This Semillon has the weight of a ripe Pinot Gris, with enticing scents of lime, honey and beeswax, and a lush palate of melon, citrus curd, and almond. Dry as a bone, alive with vivid acidity and a touch of oak creaminess, it’s the kind of wine to pair with luxury seafood like halibut or scallops. Look for botanical aromas when you are smelling this wine - that's the signature of the Cape's fynbos ground-covering vegetation.
