Colonia Las Liebres is an exciting winery involving Italians Alberto Antonini, Attilio Pagli, Antonio Moreschaldi, and Chilean geologist Pedro Parra. It is part of their Altos Las Hormigas terroir specialist project, which has quickly gained renown for producing wines with a highly distinctive regional identity. Their idea at Colonia Las Liebres (loosely translated as rabbit colony, celebrating the local hares), is to celebrate the uniqueness of Bonarda, a grape previously used anonymously in blended wines. Bonarda is the second most planted red grape in Argentina after Malbec, and this wine is a supple, mouth-filling red with luscious flavours of cherries and plums. Fermented and aged in concrete pools, it’s juicy, lithe, and has a pleasingly light tannic frame. It’s a natural with easy meat dishes, or a spicy empanada. Interestingly, recent DNA profiling has shown that Argentine Bonarda is not the same Bonarda that is found is some parts of northwestern Italy. It’s true name is Douce Noir, and there are over 18,000 hectares of this characterful grape that originated in the Savoie region of France.
