This sleekly contemporary and 'international'-looking bottle contains a delightful surprise — a staunchly traditional blend of indigenous Portuguese grapes Castelao, Aragonez, and Touriga Nacional. Ripe, herbal, and earthy, it is both densely fruity and firmly tannic in a delightfully old-school way. ‘Casabel’ is a special label that is produced only in the very best years.

Famous Portuguese poet, Fernando Pessoa, would religiously visit ‘Abel’s house’ or ‘Casa Abel’ for inspiration while he wrote some of his best work. Anyone acquainted with Fernando knew that ‘inspiration’ meant he would go to drink Abel’s best red wine, a sentiment preserved in the label that shows Pessoa’s work and Abel’s best. Casabel comes from a region called Óbidos, not far from the colourful, bustling city of Lisboa.

For your culinary inspiration, try pairing it with a Lisbon classic of duck and rice, a potent and savoury concoction that also features bacon and chorizo, and a scattering of herbs. Duck rice, ‘arroz de pato’ is Portugal’s answer to Spain’s paella, and will warm you from the inside out, as November’s blustery weather kicks in.
